Well, he's at it again. Alex made another workout video. (well, he actually made it a couple of weeks ago, but, I just found time to upload it to youtube) He has several more that are in progress. Here is his latest.
Keep up the good work, Alex! You'll be stronger in no time!

Ear Bud
We hung out at my mom's a little this afternoon to celebrate her birthday. (a little birthday party) All was going well with our celebration, we were getting ready to leave and Nick asks Nona for a Q-Tip. Not sure why he needed to clean his ear's out, but, hey, when the child needs to clean his ears, you let him clean his ears, no matter where you are, right?
Turns out, he wasn't cleaning out his ears, but, his ear buds (you know, those things that go in your ears so you can listen to music). He decided to do this over the bathroom sink. Next thing I hear is that his ear bud went down the drain. (it doesn't help that we just bought these for him for Christmas) I asked why he didn't close the drain, he said there isn't a plug. I said to go talk to your Uncle Steve and ask him to help.
So, there is Uncle Steve, taking apart the bathroom drain so we can retrieve the missing ear bud. It, apparently, wasn't a pretty sight. RT was surprised Nick still wanted it after seeing all it went through (you have to know Nick and that he isn't big on germs). Nick thanked his Uncle for retrieving the ear bud and, had to thank his grandmother (who will have to clean up the mess under the sink, Thanks, Nona!). Nothing like a little unexpected plumbing project to end a party, huh?
Once in the car, Nick popped the ear bud in and listened to music all the way home. I'm hoping he cleaned the bud when he got home (that I will never know, and, I'm not sure if I will want to know).
Thanks, Uncle Steve!

Nail Clippers
There is a controversy rising in our household. It has been going on for many years. Unfortunately, I think only one person is aware of the plot. It is causing undue stress. It is all over a pair of nail clippers.
Let's hear RT's side of the story, shall we?
RT claims that he sees the nail clippers on the bathroom counter and will then decide to clip his nails. He will then put them on his side of the medicine cabinet (or in his bag in the drawer). He says they are there to be used. If he puts them in his bag, it is because we might need them if we go somewhere (ie, on vacation). He does not intentionally take them and hide them from me.
Ok, let's hear my side of the story now.
The nail clippers are put in a bag in a drawer in the bathroom that also holds nailpolish. I keep them all together so I know where they are when I need them. In an emergency, if you need the nail clippers, I know exactly where to find them. (nail clipper emergencies happen all the time, it's best to always be prepared) I started keeping them in the bag, because if they were left on the counter (see above), they would disappear and I could not find them.
RT would like to stress that I did not keep them inside my bag this time. I intentionally hid them. He says that I have them in the nail clippers witness protection program. (I can not reveal their new location at this time, as they are protected by the U.S. Marshals)
I explained that they were in the bag, and they were being plucked out of their cozy, home. Kidnapped, used and put somewhere away from their home, they were all alone and afraid in their new surroundings. I couldn't live with that! Especially if I really needed to use them and didn't have the time or manpower to search the surrounding area and locate them in their new hiding place.
I extended the olive branch and pulled the clipper's out of their protective home (I went in alone, remember, no one can know their whereabouts) and placed them on the bathroom counter for him to use.
RT has informed me that he will be going to the store and buying his own nail clippers.

Diarrhea
Yea, I'm sure that title reached out and grabbed you, didn't it? It's one of those titles that makes you want to read on to see what it's about, but, on the other hand, you're hesitant because you have a feeling you know what's coming. And, with me writing it, you never know what it's going to be about, right? Hey, RT, here's your little keyword that's going to draw more people to read my blog! I wonder how many people google the word, "diarrhea?" Look! I said it twice! And, you're still reading this because you're curious about the title. Or, you just like reading about the subject. Maybe you are the one and only that google's this word?
Ok, I should probably get on with my story (you know theres always story).
Bella decided to do a project. There was an empty shoebox and she decided she could make a diorama. You remember those, don't you? Where you make a scene inside a shoebox? I remember making a snow scene when I was in grade school. I used cotton balls as the snow, blue paper for the sky... ok, get on with the story, we don't need to hear about you or your boring school projects. Blah, blah, blah.
Bella decided to make a little habitat for a wolf. (she did this all on her own, no help or ideas from me or RT, she just did it) She colored some paper with a green marker (for the grass), took some blue paper to make a lake, the blue/green background is "the world." She got a stick and a rock from the yard and glued everything down. She was so proud of her work that she brought it to school.
When she got home she told us how excited her teacher was about it and let her share it with the class. Nick came home from school and Bella says to him, "Do you want to see my diarrhea?" Now, the look on Nick's face was priceless. That picture would have been great for you to see. He had this shocked look on his face. I can only imagine what he was thinking. Something like, This is my sister. She had diarrhea and saved it and now wants to show me it. This is what I have to work with as a family.
Nick says, what did you say? Bella repeats herself, "Do you want to see my diarrhea?" Now, Nick is really concerned, looks at me for some help, or maybe to say, you let her keep her diarrhea? What's wrong with you? I, at that point, tried to control my laughter and said, she meant, diorama. Nick then had a sense of relief on his face. His family is crazy, but, not THAT crazy.
That night at dinner, Bella asked if she could share her "diorama" with the family. Nick and I exchanged looks and laughed.
This is the first "diorama" with the wolf. She added the penguin on top (he has his own diorama on top). The box folds, and the penquin goes inside.
Probably not going to win many awards, but, she did it by herself, so, I was proud.
She decided to make another one (because one is NOT enough). She said she wants to have a diorama store so she could make them for people. Alot better than having a diarrhea store. I don't think many people would stop by.
This second picture is to show you the little dog in the corner.
And, that my friends, is my "diarrhea" story.

Happy Birthday, Mom!
I took a little drive to visit my mom today. It was a surprise. My parents never were big on surprises. We were told not to surprise them (ever). I took that as a personal challenge. It's good to have goals in life that were instilled by your parents.
I drove to my mom's house and as I was driving down her street, I called her (on the phone). I wished her a happy birthday and asked what she was going to do today. She said she didn't have any big plans. She heard my car door beeping and asked if I was driving. I said, no, I just arrived. I asked her where she was, she told me she was looking out the front window. (at that time, I had started to walk in the back door) (my brother, Steve, was in on this, and he opened the door for me) She asked me something else and I answered (and she knew I was in the same room). I think she was happily surprised I stopped by. (I guess I will find out later if I'm in trouble)

I think I'm paranoid
When I started this blog, I was writing about happenings around me (well, I still am). I think RT was getting paranoid I was going to write about him or twist things around with my words (apparently, I must be good at that). I think he was afraid to do things in fear that I would put a little spin on it and blog about it. The thought didn't cross my mind, but, when he mentioned it, it did sound like something fun to do.
Lately he has taken to giving me topics to write about on my blog. Of course, they aren't serious topics. "RT eats lunch," "I made dinner," "Washing the dishes." The titles are said like an announcer, then he will say a few lines that could go under that post.
An example:
"RT eats lunch. Today RT sat down and ate a sandwich. He said it was good."
Today I had him. I told him I was going to talk about him and personal things. I said it would be good and boost my blog up in the ranks. After mentioning a topic to him and what I would say, he hesitated for a little bit (because, well, it's something that I would probably do and, it could be embarassing). I told him I was kidding. Of course, he then told me that it was a great idea and that more people would read it if they are searching that particular word.
I think I'll just keep him paranoid.

Left foot, left foot, right foot, right
Bella has been learning how to read. She started out chiming in when I would read to her, sometimes finishing a page or two. She gets stuck on words, but, she is learning how to sound them out. I suggested that she practice with Dr. Seuss books and she can read them to the dog. (Newton is a great listener)
Next thing I see, there is Bella reading Hop on Pop (my favorite book) to Newton and he is loving it! You can tell he can't wait until she gets to the next page. Oh, the anticipation on his face. Ok, he's really trying to close his eyes andsleep meditate on every word that is being read to him.
We visited my mom last week and she found a book that she thought Bella might want. (thanks, Mom, I owe you one) It's The Foot Book, by Dr. Seuss. (we have this one at home, but, we can always use another one) Bella has left this book in my car so she can read when we are driving somewhere. She had a few bumps when starting out, but, she worked through them. She can breeze through it now without problems. The kicker is, she likes to read out loud. Now, I love hearing her read, I think its so amazing when your kids read to you. It's like magic. But, I'm thinking we have to change it up a little. It probably doesn't help that I think I know all of the Dr. Seuss books by memory from reading them to the kids (so many times).
Yesterday, on the way to and from gymnastics she read The Foot Book to me. We went to the store and I heard it a couple more times (I even chimed in with her because I know the words). Just one small problem. All day yesterday I had the words of The Foot Book going through my head. It was endless storytime in my brain. You could probably have stopped me at any point during the day and asked me what was I thinking, and I would spit out a Dr. Seuss book to you.
As I was crawling into bed, I told RT. He thought I was just being funny. I then recited the entire book for him. I'm sure he is thinking I need some serious help.

Snapshot of the week
Thought I should add something like this so you can see what I see (or what I don't see?) in my life.
I took this one looking down at the front entryway. This was taken on Friday. We had a snowstorm, Bella, Alex and his friends went sledding and, of course, everyone ended up at our house. The kids all took their coats, snow pants, gloves, hats, scarves and boots off and left them all in a pile by the door. Some look at it as a big mess. I look at it as a lot of fun. :)

Sledding
I will probably get in trouble for putting some of these pictures up, but, until then, let's enjoy them, shall we?
We got about 8" of snow on Friday. It was wonderful! I love snowstorms (when I don't have to be out driving in them). School buses were a little late (Nick's was over an hour late getting home). Traffic was bad, but, there was lots of snow to play in!
RT took Bella and Alex and some friends sledding on Friday while it was snowing (only a few other crazies out there). All of us went today. There was some grumbling about going, but, that one actually had a good time.
My pictures aren't great, it's hard to get a clear action photo. I couldn't tell them to stop half way down the hill so I can get a good picture.
My hands froze taking pictures and video. I had a hard time moving the fingers on my right hand when we got back into the car.
Here's Alex snowboarding. He even comments on his performance.
We started going down another side of the hill (smaller and it ends up in some tall grass). The kids had fun just hanging out down there (this was after sledding for awhile)

Permit
Sometimes you don't realize how fast time has gone by. If you blink, you might miss something. I try not to blink. I want to remember everything.
Today Nick got his driving permit. He's quite proud (so am I).
RT took him out driving. (they had to drop Alex off at a friend's house, then they drove around the neighborhood) With little snowflakes falling, it was a good first time drive. I think Nick was pretty excited about the whole experience. (I know we are)

Newton
Newton is shown much love in our house. All three kids goof around with him in their own way.
Bella and I decided to put her art shirt on Newton. I don't think he felt comfortable wearing clothes, but, he put up with us for a few minutes.
Bella and RT got Newton a new duck toy. This is a first for Newton. He was never allowed plush toys. I was afraid he would rip up the kids stuffed animals, so he was only allowed rawhides. After much convincing, he is now quite happy with his toy. I shot this video clip because he was slipping on the wood floor. If you notice, the second time he runs to get the toy, he trots and he times it so he can pick it up without slipping on the floor.

Christmas Cards
All of the Christmas decorations are down and put away. I loved using my card holder that we made.
What do you do with your old Christmas cards? I like to look at them, then, I start cutting them apart. I use them for either making new cards for next year, or making gift tags for next year's gifts. (yes, a little planning ahead, but, in 11 months, you will be thanking me that you did this when you did).
What do you need?
Old Christmas cards
cardstock
glue
scissors
If a card does not have any writing on the back of the picture, you can use that as a Christmas postcard (or as a post Christmas thank you card) (good thinking, huh?) If not, there might be some smaller items that you want to cut from your cards to make new cards or to make gift tags. Remember, for gift tags, the pictures will have to be small.
Here is a sample of what I cut out.
Now, I don't have much for gift tags, I mostly have wording for cards. I have already contacted others about their cards (hoping to be able to make all the cards for next year). Here is a sample of what I have done (one gift tag and one Christmas card):
I know I have a long way to go, but, it's a start.
It worked out perfectly!

Clean, Clean, Clean
Loving the new washer and dryer. They actually get my clothes clean! (something I am not used to) (well, not like I've been walking around in dirty clothes) I should say with minimal effort on my part. I can put away the ol' washboard. And plans for having a stream put in the backyard have been scrapped. (yes, I am kidding)
After looking at my pictures of the old machines, I have decided that my laundry area needs a little perking up. (I spend ALOT of time here, so, it should be a cheery area that I want to spend time in) And, I certainly have spent alot of time in that area since the new washer/dryer have joined us. I will have to post pictures later when I start sprucing it up.
For now, I'm very thankful for my new washer and dryer. So happy that they could join us. So, thankful, that I must Tebow it..

Peace and ...
I love when it snows. I am the snow thrower in the family (everyone needs one). I like to tell people that most people buy a snow thrower, RT married one. I think of it as exercise. It's also nice and peaceful to be outside, shoveling and the snow is falling. It's magical. All is quiet. (that's something I don't get much at home with the kids)
This morning's shovel was nice. Bella came out and was helping me. She's a workhorse. I think she will eventually take over once I am no longer able. All was nice and quiet (no snowfall, tho), we were at the end of the driveway when the snowblower people came out. I understand the older people having one but, people younger than me have them. We don't have long driveways here. Its funny, because Bella was bothered by it, too. She said she liked the quiet.
We finished up quickly, played a little in the snow then went back inside the house. We'll go out later when its quiet.

They say it happens in threes
More bad news to bring you. Our washer and dryer have gone to appliance heaven.
No, it wasn't sudden. We knew it was coming. There were signs. Huge puddles, clothes not getting clean, water retention (water remaining in the washer), clothes not drying in a timely manner. I held the torch and kept nursing them along (RT was ready to dump the two a long time ago). I wiped up puddles, put it back on the spin cycle, pre-scrubbed clothes to make it easier to clean. I worried, I prayed, I gave little pep talks. But, on New Years Eve (yes, I was washing clothes on New Years Eve, doesn't everyone? Are there other things to do? What were you doing?) I knew it was time. I had to let go and say good bye.
Here lies Mr. Wash and Mrs. Dry. They have stuck by our sides through all kinds of dirt and grime. Small loads and large loads with a few delicates in between. Mr. Wash took great pride in washing all dirty, grimy, filthy, contaminated, greasy, stained things (clothing, rags, burp rags, towels, dog blankets) that were handed to him. He never complained. He did his job with pride. Mrs. Dry handled all the drying, removal of dog hair and dust that we sent her way. She, too, did her job without complaints.
A service will be held on Thursday, at which time, their replacements will take over.

It's Time
STOP!
DON'T TOUCH THAT!
LEAVE ME ALONE!
Yes, we have reached that fun point of Christmas break when you realize, it's time for the kids to go back to school. They have done their best in sharing and getting along for two whole weeks (that's a difficult thing for siblings to do)(well, at least for my children) They have played games together, watched movies together and even driven their parents crazy together (easy to do since they have the same parents).
Since they (well, a couple of them) are older, I have to say that this break wasn't that bad. They had a lot of time where they got along nicely when together. Today they had the big box from the water heater to play inside. (Alex and Bella made 2 houses) They were neighbors and I even heard Bella say that she was bringing a casserole over to Alex's house. (very thoughtful of her) Nice, tender moments like that make me wish that they could be home longer. But, I know all too well that after a few of those tender moments there will be plenty of fighting.
"GIVE ME THAT!"
"DON'T TOUCH THAT!
"STOP!"
and the most used line in our house, the one that was used after the house playing today, by Alex,
"GET OUT OF MY ROOM!"
Yea, it's time. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Saying Goodbye
Saying good bye is a hard thing to do. Unless, of course it is saying goodbye to the 2 minute shower. That is about how long our hot water lasted when taking a shower. Believe me, if you were put to the test, you would be able to get your entire shower routine done in two minutes. It may not be your best attempt, but it would get done. Of course, there would have to be compromises. Wash my hair or shave? Wash my hair and shave (that one takes special skills, one must be quite flexible or you will throw your back out) or wash my body? Tough decisions.
These have been the types of decisions we have had to make in our house for, well, quite a long time. All of that extra stress in our lives over these life changning decisions.
See, our hot water heater, may it rest in peace, was getting a little old. It was here in the house before we moved in 15 years ago. He did the best he could over the years. Worked long, hard hours. Sometimes putting in some overtime when needed. He had a couple of medical procedures done over the years, nothing major, just a new heating element here and there. He gave his all for us and we really appreciated it. In the end, though, things weren't as good. Very short bursts of hot water, followed by icy cold. We said our goodbyes. It was his time to go.
In walks our new water heater. An energy saving kind of guy. He's a little shorter than the last one, but, that's ok. He can do the job. He is being put to the test tonight (he has a load of dishes to do and some rags to wash that his predecessor soiled) He's a little nervous, but, I'm sure he will do just fine.
Here is a little glimpse at the guy, kinda cute, isn't he?
Here is the handsome man that installed him.
and here is the little problem that the handsome man solved (a broken washer that took the handsome man 4 hours to figure out and cost us $1.81) that saved us a huge plumber's fee
The handsome man is quite grateful and has decided to Tebow it
He then ran off to take a hot tub and has not been seen since.
As for me, I am looking forward to extending my shower tomorrow to, say, 3 1/2 minutes. Cut me some slack here, I'm just trying to live a little, you know, enjoy life to the fullest! Don't be so hard on me! It is a new water heater that will actually produce hot water. Let me enjoy that awhile. I deserve it! Who knows, I might not know what to do with all of that extra time and get out early!

Hike
Finally got out of the room and went for a hike at Peninsula State Park. It's a balmy 30 degrees (feels a little colder with the wind off the lake). We have been up here many times over the years (watched the boys grow over our many visits up here) so it was fun to reminisce during our short drive to the park. Lots of memories and stories.
Thought I would share some of the pictures from our hike. I don't have the group of wild turkeys picture. I'll have to get that one from RT or Alex. RT made some type of bird call out the window and all of the turkeys put their heads straight up. It was pretty neat to see.
It felt good to get out take a hike and get some fresh air.
Here's to a good night sleep!

That's Bella and Alex climbing the side of a huge rock (not my idea)
Bella was behind me taking pictures. I took a picture of her taking a picture of me
RT, Nick and Alex walking down the road
There were trails, this trail let us to a road and then to the old ski hill
which we decided to walk down
One year, we slid down on our bottoms down this hill. It was fun!
This is looking down
Looking up the hill from where I was standing
(I did eventually make it down the hill)

My Time
Apparently, 4am is my time. It's the time I wake up. I try to go back to sleep, but, I'm wide awake. I lie awake for hours until I decide to finally get out of bed.(thats usually around 6am) Today I had to wait until 8am. (we're up in Door County for a couple of days, so, most of my family sleeps in and there really isn't anywhere I could go) I try to fall asleep but, you know your body is awake. Then it moves into trying to sleep and thinking about things. What am I going to do today? Why did I do that? What was I thinking on that one (or was I thinking)? How am I going to handle that? What is the meaning of life?
I think last night I pretty much wrote this blog entry in my head. I should have turned the computer on and started typing. I think it was a lot better at 4, than it is now.
4am hasn't always been my time. There are times when it is 2am (thats a killer). 3am is pretty popular, too. I would like it to move to 6am. That would be a little more convenient for me. It would also be nice to actually get sleep at night.
My usual is to get up and get some exercise and jump into my day. Today, I had a little delay, so I could write this up for you. I didn't want you to miss out on my time, since you were a big part of it this morning. I'm off to get some exercise. I'm hoping to move my time a little later tomorrow.

That's Mr. Hefner, to you
On Monday's and Thursdays the kids are to bring down their dirty clothes to the laundry room. (Nick knows how to do laundry, but, sometimes I will wash his clothes) I wash, dry and fold, and they have to put their clean clothes away. Not a bad deal, if you ask me. This plan usually works well if all rules are followed. Something usually breaks down in the process. For example, we are set to go somewhere and you hear, "I don't have any clothes to wear!" They would tell this to RT (who, at first, did not know about the whole process). RT would wonder why they don't have any clothes? Don't I buy them clothes to wear? Once RT was filled in on the process, he understood and started telling them to find something to wear. (this would tie into the putting your clothes away in the correct drawer so that you can find them)
For the last week, I have been doing laundry and have noticed that none of Alex's clothes have been in any of the loads. So, today being Monday, I said, once again, loud and clear for eveyone that they should bring their dirty clothes down to the laundry room. I turned to Alex and said, you might want to bring down some clothes, because I haven't washed any of yours in the past week.
The answer I received? "I've been wearing my pajamas for the last week!" which is true. He lives in his pajamas. Any moment that he can, he is wearing his pajamas. He comes home from school, runs upstairs and puts them on before I even see him. (makes we wonder if he wore them to school?) And, since they have been on break for the last week, he has been wearing pajamas the whole time. Maybe there have been a few times where he had to put on civilian clothes (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Eve).
I should probably mention that several years ago, I bought the boys robes. Alex LOVED his robe and wore it all of the time. So, I gave him the nickname, Hugh Hefner, or just Hef.
So, as I was saying, Hef, please bring down your pajamas so I can wash them. You still have another week of Christmas break. Thank you.

What happened?
Nothing like finding out on New Years day that someone has hijacked your ITunes account, changed the password, personal questions and email and has access to your credit card.
Ok, a whopping $.40 was charged to the card. Not exactly a lot of money, but, how did they get my account information? And, what else are they going to buy with my credit card?
RT and I both have Itunes accounts and were trying to figure out who got a hold of the information (and how). I could not access my account at all. They changed the password, email and personal questions. RT's account was fine (I didn't even know he had an account). RT ended up calling the credit card company and cancelling our credit card (so we are without a credit card for the moment, until they send us a new one).
We went through all of the scenarios. Did the kids give our our account information to someone? Who would they have given the information to? On and on. Then, we realize that Nick just sold his Itouch to GameStop. Maybe the account info was on his Itouch and now the person who purchased it is able to access my account and change all of the information and start buying stuff. You think they would check the stuff out first?
We told Nick what happened (we don't blame him). We just said we learned a valuble lesson. We should check out our electronics before recycling/selling/trading them. He said that he ran a program that reset his Ipod.
Alex came home from a friends house and we relayed the story. RT asked him if he had bought anything on Itunes. He said he did, but, he had a credit. We showed him the purchase that was made on New Years Eve and he said that was him.
So, to make a long story short, we cancelled out credit card thinking that someone else had access to it and it was our own child.
My Itunes account is still messed up and Itunes has been very helpful in cancelling the credit card for the account and restoring it back for my personal use.
I guess it's just another crazy day in my life.

Thankful
Last year I set out to write 5 things that I am thankful for everyday. I heard that this will change your attitude about things. I didn't have a bad attitude, but, wanted to put this challenge to the test. Who doesn't want to have a better attitude?
I learned a lot in the last year. There are days that are going your way and everything looks great. Writing down your five things is no problem on these days. Somedays, nothing happens. Maybe you are sick or you didn't do anything. That makes it a little difficult to come up with five things.
It didn't help that the first half of the year was a little challenging with my dad being sick. It did make me take a good look around me and see what I am blessed with and to be grateful. Memories, family, our health, having a home and food to eat were all things to be thankful for. Nick finishing 8th grade. Bella's dance recital, Alex playing basketball, first days of school, vacations and my dog.
It's something that I think I will continue. It makes me look for and notice the good that is there. It helps me appreciate what I have especially when I think I don't have much.
I just read about another challenge. (oh, no, here we go again) This ties into a post I made a few days ago. A book by John Kralik, "A Simple Act of Gratitude" tells how the author wrote a thank you note a day (to different people, I assume) to acknowledge the gift or blessing that he received. (all that torture with thank you note writing is coming back to haunt us) Seriously, what a great way to see the good in every day things and to share with others your joy and thankfulness? Writing all my joys in my journal are nice, but, why not spread the love a little?
So, I believe this is my New Year's challenge this year. To express my thankfulness to one and all and spread the love of peace and happiness. I'm not sure if I can write a note a day. I will continue to be thankful in my journal, but, I plan on letting others know how grateful I am (for what they have done, their thoughts, kind words, etc). This is going to be a challenge. Wish me luck.
