Easy Halloween Costume

If you've been following me for awhile, you know I've got your back when it comes to making that last minute Halloween costume.   I've shared a couple of costumes that I made in the past.  Click here to view them.

This blog post is for those of you who like to procrastinate  like to live on the edge  are last minute Halloween costume seekers.  Halloween is tomorrow and this costume is so easy to throw together.  You probably have all of the items laying around your house already!  If you don't, then, a quick trip to the store and you can make this easy Halloween costume.  And, tomorrow, you will be ready to go Trick or Treating!

Okay.  Let's get started!

Supplies needed:
Black T-shirt *
Hot glue gun
Candy
Google Eyes or white and black felt**

*honestly, any color t-shirt will do.  Just make sure it's an old tee that you don't want to use again.  I thrifted mine.

**If you are using felt, instead of google eyes, you will need to cut out circles from the felt to make eyes and glue them together (so they look like an eye).

Directions:

Pretty simple stuff here.   Hot glue candy and google eyes in random spots onto the t-shirt and, you are.....EYE Candy!

Eye Candy!

See how easy this was to make?  Now you are ready to go Trick or Treating tomorrow!

By the way, it took about ten minutes to get this shot.  Bella had to take a picture of her feet, the dog and the ceiling along with about twenty photos of the shirt.  All twenty photos are all exactly the same.  (who needs a professional photographer, right?)

Happy Halloween!

National Hermit Day

I found another "odd" holiday that we can celebrate (separately).  Today is National Hermit Day!!

I know!  Who comes up with these weird holidays?

I, personally, found this holiday intriguing and had to do a little research and figured I would share it with you so we can both celebrate today.

A hermit is a person that keeps to him/herself and doesn't leave his/her home.  Most hermits do this out of a religious practice.

It is believed that National Hermit Day was created for St. Colman who died in Ireland in 632 A.D.  He lived a seven year hermitage in a cave in the forest.  This day was created to honor the day that he died.

So, we are basically celebrating the death of some guy who lived like a hermit.

How do we celebrate National Hermit Day, you ask?

Today is a great day for introspection and reflection.  Use this day to spend some time alone.  Take a step away from all of the craziness and find a quiet place to hang out.  Maybe it's a hike in the woods, hanging at the park, the library, your couch or maybe a closet.

Don't feel like going out?  You could take a nap.  Netflix and chill.   Catch up on your reading?  Write (start a blog or a journal).  Exercise (yoga would be perfect way to meditate today).   Do a puzzle.  Start making your halloween costume or do a craft project that you have been putting off.  Turn off your phone.  Maybe you just need to get some alone time, away from social media, phones and email.

Of course, I have to work today, but, when I get home, I'm not sure what I will do first.  Maybe I will make some tea and hide out in the closet?

Dad Jeans

Dad jeans made a big splash in the media when President Barack Obama was photographed wearing a pair back in 2008.  He kept "Dad jeans" in the public eye for the next eight years.  He did, however, see the light (or Michelle threw out all of his Dad jeans) by the end of his presidency, and modified his wardrobe and added regular, normal jeans to his wardrobe.

Recently, at work, my coworker showed me a pair of jeans and said, "Wow!  Look at these Dad jeans!  They're almost an acid wash denim.  Something you would see back in the '90's.  I would never, ever allow my husband to wear these jeans!"

I took one look at those jeans and realized, my husband has jeans just like that pair.  In fact, he has quite a few pairs in his closet.  He  lives in "Dad jeans."  His entire wardrobe is based around his Dad jeans.  Of course, I couldn't make a comment.  What would I say?

"Oh, my husband wears Dad jeans."

"My husband only owns Dad jeans."

"My husband has a closet full of Dad jeans."

"Hi.  I'm Fontaine and my husband wears Dad jeans.  He has been wearing them ever since he became a Dad.  So, um..yea...almost 23 years now."

Yea.  It's my first week working there.  I really don't need to have RT's Dad jeans embarrass me at my new job.

"Hey!  That's the new employee whose husband wears Dad jeans."

I think I will just keep all that Dad jean stuff to myself for ever  now, thank you very much.

I thought I would ask RT about his problem  Dad jean addiction  problem  collection.    This is what he had to say for himself.

"I'm a Dad.  So, I can wear Dad jeans and get away with it."

So, there you have it.

I will be hosting a support group for families with loved ones wearing Dad jeans.  Our first meeting will be next Tuesday.  Let me know if you're interested.

National Make A Difference Day

It's National Make a Difference Day!

This day was created in 1992 and is the largest national day of community service.  A celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.  USA Weekend Magazine started this day.  They stressed how society has evolved by people's actions over the years.  They challenged readers to go out and help others in their community.  You might think that you aren't making a difference, but, just your one action creates a domino effect of others doing the same (helping others) and over time it will have an effect on society in the years to come.  The magazine is no longer around, but, their idea to help the community and make a difference lives on.

Community service is when someone or a group of people do an activity or service that benefits their community or other people or a charity.  It's a great way for a person to give back to their community.

Maybe there is an area in your neighborhood that need some work.  Maybe it's an elderly neighbor who could use help fixing up their home (painting, yard work, etc.).  Maybe it's your local animal shelter or a senior center.  You can even help by donating to a charity.

Today is a great day to give back.  Doing something for others always makes you feel good about yourself.  Helping others is a great way to help yourself.  Helping others, or doing a good deed for another person creates a ripple effect.  Others see you help someone and decide to do the same.  Maybe the person that you are helping feels blessed and they go on to help another person.  You might not witness this ripple like effect personally, but, do know that your kind act will lead to many other good deeds performed by others.

How will you celebrate Make a Difference Day?

Kids Bop

For those of you who don't know, Kids Bop is children singing contemporary songs.  They sing popular songs that get heavy radio play and/or the songs that have made the Billboard Hot 100 list of songs.  The lyrics are modified so they are much more "kid friendly," taking out profanity and sexual references.  Although, some times with these modifications, the songs lose their meaning (and they don't make sense).

I've listened to more than my share  a lot of Kids Bop music during my time at the toy store.  It isn't bad when you like the song.  Unfortunately, some of the Kids Bop songs are played over and over (and over and over) to the point where you end up hating that song.  That's bad, especially if the song is still popular on the radio.  It's also bad, because I know I am going to have to hear it a million  hundred times during my next shift.  If I work on the weekend, it's long shifts and log hours of listening to Kids Bop.

The shifts I have been scheduled to work for the last couple of months have all been nights, so, unfortunately, got to hear the same songs on the overhead store speaker every time I came in to work.  It finally reached the point of me, turning off the overhead music when it got to certain annoying songs.  My coworkers laughed, but, I know deep down, they were grateful that I turned off the music.  Well, honestly, they didn't want me to ask them to sing or to hear me sing along with those songs.

My last shift is another evening shift.  So, tonight I will be listening to the same Kids Bop songs I've heard for the last two months (pray for me).  I will do my best to try and enjoy them one last time.  At my new job, they play real  normal  music.

Awkward Moment

I knew I would have some more crazy posts with this whole job change.

As most of you know (I write like I have more than my loyal two followers), I gave my notice at the toy store.  You can read all about that here.  Last week was pretty hairy.  I worked all seven days.  Some days, I worked at both jobs.  This week is a little better.  Only five days of work and 3 of those are at both places.

I'm enjoying my time at my new job.  There's always something to do.  I'm never bored.  I especially enjoy working on the floor.  I get quite a bit of exercise walking around the store.  And, that (walking and exercise) is always a good thing for me.   I'm surprised by that because I really like being at the register, ringing customers out.  That's when I get to talk to people.

On one of my register days, it was a little crazy (we had a long line).  I finished up with my customer and asked the next customer to step over.  I don't think she heard me, and as I was staring, I realized that I knew this customer from the toy store.  One of the customers that I liked to talk to during the check out process.  I didn't know if she would recognize me or not.  I wasn't totally out of the toy store (still had over a week to go) and no one there knows where I'm off to when I leave there.

The customer finally walked over and it didn't take long for it to dawn on her to recognize me.  I told her I still had a week left at the toy store and that I would miss being there.  She said that shopping at this store is much more fun.

I think things went well.  It was rather awkward at first, but, I think she understood the reason for the change.  I should probably just get used to it.  I'm sure I will have many more experiences like that in the future.

My Weird Dog

I think I am finally convinced that my dog is weird.

Yes, I have a lot of stories about him on my blog.  They all describe little oddities about him.  I find them amusing.  My family says he's just weird.  Now, I think I'm going to have to finally agree with them.  My dog is weird.

Many posts back, I wrote about Pippen getting skunked.  Not one of the great, happy times of having a dog.  In fact, it was one of the things I had hoped to avoid.  It happened and we got through it.  I think the skunk odor is totally out of his fur now.  I'm hoping it never happens again.

Ever since the skunk "incident," when I let Pippen out at night before bed, he won't go out into the yard by himself.  So, to make sure he does what he needs to do, I started walking with him out to the yard.  That's across and down the deck, onto the patio, then chasing him onto the grass.  While outside, he acts rather skittish in the yard.  Any sound or movement makes him jump.

Walking out back started to get old, so, I started letting Pippen out the front door.  As I'm walking down the driveway (yes, I have to go out, too),  he walks right behind me.  Once again, I have to tell him to get on the grass and do his business.

It took me awhile, but, I finally realized why he acts so weird when I let him outside at night.  He's afraid of getting skunked again.  He's so scared that he would rather not venture out into the darkness and just hold it in all night.

RT says Pippen is getting soft in his old age.  I think he's just being a big baby.

And now, I'm sure everyone else is thinking that he's just plain weird.

The Silent Treatment

As I mentioned a couple of blog posts ago, I gave my notice at the toy store.  As I stated in that post, it was hard to do because I worked there for so long.  It was like working with friends or family (okay.  Maybe not family...)  I didn't mind the work, when it was busy, but, the scheduled hours and well, not getting enough hours during the week, was what pushed me to find something else.

I gave my notice in a  professional way.  Like I said, it was difficult to do.  I know it was for the best for me and my family.  Knowing the business side of things, I know it isn't the best time of year to leave, since holiday is coming up (the busiest time of year for the retail industry).

Since my resignation, I have been given the silent treatment by the managers and the owner.  I guess it didn't help that another co worker gave her notice a few days after me (which is no fault of mine).

It isn't fun working when no one is talking to you.  Well, I do have my fellow co workers who are still friendly.  I thought of giving my remaining shifts away to coworkers.  I mean, why bother going to work when no one (management) wants you there?

I thought about it and realized how childish the entire situation has become.  I felt like I was in Junior High again and the mean girls decided to turn against me.  I was feeling a little uneasy about leaving.  "Am I making the right decision?"  "What if things don't turn out the way I expect them too?"  And then, it dawned on me.

Things are much better this way.  It makes it a lot easier for me to leave. I realize that I am making a better decision by changing jobs and that I will definitely grow from this experience.

So, I will be working the rest of my shifts.

Possibly in silence.

Awesome!

You know I can't leave my old job at the toy store without writing a blog post (or three).

I have been scheduled lately with one of the younger new hires (well, she's not the youngest, she's in college).  She is quite friendly with the customers, but, not so much with the staff.  And, if she is not waiting on a customer, she will just hang out at the register and stare off into space.  I'm not sure if she just doesn't want to work or doesn't know how to do it?  I did ask a few hundred  times if they trained her.  I have asked her to help straighten the store, and even offered to show her how it's done.  Every time I ask her, she tells me that she knows how to do it.  Oh, yea, sometimes, instead of staring off into space, she will doodle.  She even leaves her drawings on the counter so everyone knows what she was doing on her shift.

Unfortunately, the owner and manager think she's great.  Mainly because she says, "awesome" so much.  In fact, they were giddy because she said, "awesome" nine times to the same customer.  When I heard this, I felt like we hit an all time low and was actually feeling embarrassed for the store.

I have been scheduled with this person for the majority of my shifts for the last few months.   I try to go into the shift with a positive mind,  knowing that I will be doing the work of two people that evening.  I also know that I will hear the word, "awesome" a million  thousands of  hundreds numerous times.

I guess you can say that this "awesome" situation is the straw that broke the camel's back.  It was part of my "awesome" motivation to move on.   (It's catchy, isn't it?)

We are scheduled to work together on my last shift.

Pray for me.

National Grouch Day

The day was originally created to celebrate the world's favorite grouch, Oscar the Grouch, from Sesame Street.  Remember watching that show?

Today is National Grouch Day!  It's a day to celebrate all of the grouches that we know and for us to embrace our inner grouch.  Today we can complain, wallow in misery or just be plain crabby all day. No one can stop us!  This day allows us to vent and complain about, well, everything .  It's not easy being happy all of the time.  It's good to complain once in awhile.  Believe it or not, complaining can be good for you.  It has a cathartic effect.  But, for most, complaining is just a way of life.

How to spot a grouch?  A grouch is someone who loves to complain and is happy to have someone that can share in their misery.  Misery loves company.  They will never admit they are happy because their main goal in life is to be miserable.

Famous grouches?  Oscar the Grouch, of course, and Grumpy Cat.

What to do on National Grouch Day?  Whine a little, unleash your inner grouch today and you will be happy and thankful the rest of the year.

Share your sense of humor.  Today is great for those with a dry sense of humor.  Sharing memes on social media is great, too.

Watch an episode of Sesame Street.  When was the last time you did that?  Maybe watching Oscar the Grouch will lighten your mood?

So, don't be a  grump...be a grouch today1  Celebrate your inner Oscar the Grouch.

Taking off in a New Direction

No.  That title is not referring to a new boy band (Does anybody remember the band, One Direction?)

And, no.  My blog is not going in a different direction.  It will always be a scary journey inside my life.  I don't think there's any way to change my scary life blog.

Many of you know that I currently work in a toy store.  If you have been following for awhile, you know I have posted a few scary stories about the fun that I have at work  my job.  Remember Dumpster Diving?  Or, making ice cream at work?  And then I made moon dough?  You also probably remember me saying at the end of each post how I really need to find a new job.

Well, I finally went out and did just that...  Found myself a new job!

It took a little while to find the perfect job.  I tried to be patient during the job search process.  My list for the perfect job was:  closer to home, decent pay and weekday daytime hours (so I can be home when the young child gets home from school).  Apparently, that's a lot to ask for in a job.  Most companies want you there all day or there are some night or weekend hours that go along with the job.  It did get to a point where I thought I would be stuck here in this job forever.

One day, I was out goofing around  shopping and as I was walking out of one of my favorite stores, I saw a sign.  "Now hiring.  Weekday days."  I really thought this was too good to be true.  I quickly grabbed my phone, snapped a picture and went home and applied.  Within a day or so, I got an interview and was hired.

Turning in my resignation was pretty hard for me.  I worked at the toy store for 6 years and a lot of the people there have become like family.   I do know that this new job will a better fit for me in the long run.  The commute is a lot shorter, I get a discount, and, I'll get to spend more time with my family.

The next couple of weeks will be a little crazy for me as I transition.  I'll do my best to keep things normal around here for you.  Thanks for sticking with me.

Golf

Yep.  You guessed it.  I'm at the car dealler once again.  If you're new here, search golf on my blog and you will see millions  thousands  many posts on the subject.  Every time I visit the car dealer (which is quite often), there always seems to be a golf game or golf tournament on the television in the waiting room.  There are a lot of posts because my car is a lemon  needs to visit the junk yard  likes to visit the car dealer frequently.

My car has had millions  numerous problems.  One of the main problems has been with the emissions.  I believe with the car company's attempt to "fix" this problem, it has created numerous other issues.  Add in the recalls and, well, there you have it.  The reason for my very own, personalized chair in the car dealership waiting room (I'm sure you are very jealous).

You would think that as a preferred customer, with my own personalized seat, I would be able to dictate or at least have a say in what is playing on the television in the waiting room.  Of course, if I did have the authority to decide what to watch, I don't think I could pick a show.

What's on television during the day?

Bad talk shows.  Game shows.  More bad talk shows.  Soap operas (are they still on television or did they all end  up living happily ever after?).  Even more bad talk shows.  News shows.  Some more bad talk shows.  Oh, and even more bad talk shows.  Hey!  Golf!  That looks interesting!  Why don't we watch people play golf?

Okay.  I feel better.  I got to have my say on what we watch here at the dealer.  Maybe I can get everyone here to write a guest post for the blog.  They can write their reviews on watching golf tournaments.  I'm sure their posts would be really interesting to read.

Three hours in this nightmare  here today.  I think they are going to offer me a job here and start paying me for these visits.

National Handbag Day

I found another weird  interesting holiday to celebrate.  Today is National Handbag Day.  It's a day to celebrate all of the different types of handbags.

Handbags come in many shapes and sizes.  They can be as small as an envelope or as large as a carry on suitcase.  Handbags come in every solid color and a variety of prints like leopard, zebra and even stripes.  You can get a sparkly bag or one with rhinestones.  There is a handbag out there for everyone.

Whatever you call it... purse?  pocketbook?  Clutch?  Evening bag?  Case?  Pouch?  Handbags have been used for thousands of years.  The earliest bags were used to carry tools or gear.  Sometimes the user decorated them with beads or even dyed the material.

How to celebrate National Handbag Day?  Wear your favorite handbag today.  Or, use this day to buy a new handbag.

Why am I celebrating this holiday?  Because I need to celebrate all of the time and effort and mental stress  that I put into finding myself a new purse.  (click HERE, HERE and HERE for a little back story on my purse issues)

I have such a hard time committing to a purse.  I'm not one to just jump in and buy a purse the minute I see it.  I have to stress about it  think about it both in and outside of the store.  I might have to go back to the store a couple of times to look at it.  I will meditate  obsess over it for weeks and then, maybe I will actually purchase the purse.  It's a very stressful time for me.

I do have a few purses in my current collection (and by a few, I mean two or three).  I will be celebrating them and, maybe, I will venture out and peruse some new purses.

Chocolate Chip Chokies

I know my brother Steve is having a good laugh at that title.

I briefly mentioned my Mom making Chocolate Chip Cookies in a post or two ago and how she would freeze them right away.  What I forgot to mention was the consistency of the cookies.

My Mom used the Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe that appears on the back of their Chocolate Chip bag.  The only problem with that was when my Mom made them, they were as hard as a rock.  I made the mistake  commented to my Mom one time about the cookie's hardness and she replied that she liked them that way.  On top of the hockey puck  rock  cookie being so hard, my Mom would place them in the freezer, making them permanently hard.  I'm not sure if she was trying to get us to chip a tooth or what?

Oh, I should probably talk about the name, Chocolate Chip Chokies.  My Mom wrote her recipes out on recipe cards back in the day.  When she wrote out the recipe title, she wrote:  Chocolate Chip Chokies.  She tried to turn the "h" into an "o," but, it didn't quite work.  You could still see that it was originally an "h."  The card was kept as is and we found it hilarious and referred to them as "chokies."

When we started making the cookies on our own, we added only the recommended amount of flour and they were a normal consistency (in other words, not as hard as a hockey puck).

All this talk about hockey pucks  rocks  cookies and I'm feeling the need to make some.

Here's the recipe:

TollHouse Chocolate Chip Chokies

1 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp hot water and mix alternately with
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chocolate chips

In a large bowl, mix in order as they appear.   Bake 350 for 18-20 minutes.

Oh, if you want to achieve that consistency of a rock, just keep adding flour (in addition to the 2 1/4 cups) so the cookie batter is not sticky at all.  (Hey, that's how I was taught).

Enjoy!

Freezer

Growing up, I remember my parents would buy meat in large quantities and my Mom would take the time to cut it up into smaller portions and freeze it.  When my Mom worked on the meat, it was usually a two day process.

When I was little, I didn't think anything of this whole process.  As I got older, my Mom turned this whole freezing thing into a way of life.  If we had some leftovers, my Mom would freeze a portion or all of them.  She would make a lasagna and freeze what we did not eat.  Sometimes she would just freeze the whole thing!  She would freeze EVERYTHING!  Chocolate Chip Cookies was another item that went into the freezer.  My Mom would make a batch and once they were cool, she would put them into a container and pop those puppies right into the freezer.  You walk into the house and smell cookies and find out that they have already been frozen.  If food didn't get touched right away, my Mom had the container out and was ready to freeze it.

We used to joke about how I wouldn't bring home any boyfriends.  I was afraid my Mom would toss them into the freezer along with all of her other frozen goodies.

Time has passed and guess what?  I have discovered the wonders of the freezer.  I started small and worked my way up.  Extra marinara sauce.  A huge butternut squash and only using a portion of it.  Gradually I worked up to the next level.  Green peppers are starting to go bad?  Slice them up and freeze them for later.  Buy too many onions?  Before they go bad, dice them up and freeze them.    You'll thank yourself later when you don't have an onion and you won't have to do all of that chopping!

I used to make fun of my Mom and her freezing sickness and here I am, freezing everything in sight.  Well, except for Chocolate Chip cookies.  Those never make it to the freezer.  They seem to disappear right away.

Things Mysteriously Disappearing

I mentioned a few posts back about my nail clippers and how they mysteriously disappeared from the comforts of their long time home (click HERE to read that post).  Someone  Bella told me that she used them and put them back.  That was and is her story and she is sticking to it.  I did locate my nail clippers.  They were hanging out in the laundry room on top of the dryer.  I guess "someone" got the urge to clip their nails while doing a load of laundry.

The nail clippers are now safe from predators.  I can not disclose their location at this time.

Bella was telling me how she always returns things after she uses them.  You can say that I taught her well.  I can say, "Why did she do her nails and leave the stuff out in my bathroom?  And, why  was the nail polish remover in her room?"

The nail clipper is just one of many items that seem to be mysteriously disappearing from our house.

Recently, I went looking for a body spray (aka perfume bottle) I purchased not too long ago.  It was in my medicine cabinet and then somehow made it's way onto the dresser in Bella's room.  I thought I would go into her room and use my body spray.  The spot that it's been hanging out at for the last few months is now empty.  No body spray.  I searched her room and bathroom.   No spray.  When asked about the spray, Bella said she has used it a few times and always puts it back in my medicine cabinet.  I said, "I saw it on your dresser."  She then told me that she put it back in my medicine cabinet.

I guess I should go check the dryer.  Maybe someone wanted to smell pretty while clipping their nails and doing laundry.

My Weird Dog

I figure it's been awhile since I have posted anything about my weird dog.  I'm sure everyone has been waiting patiently for a Pippen update.

I had to work over the weekend.  Before leaving for work on Saturday morning, RT asked me if there is anything I want him to get done during the weekend.  I replied, "Someone needs his nails clipped."

Yea.  That "someone" is my weird dog  Pippen.

"Someone" hates having his nails clipped.  In fact, he is terrified of having his nails clipped.  He knows where we keep the nail clippers.  If you go near that cabinet in the kitchen, he gets up and hides in the basement.   If he hears you open the cabinet (he can be in the family room), he runs down to the basement.  When we do finally tackle him and attempt to clip his nails, he will yank his paw away (one of us has to hold him and his paw) and if you do finally clip the nail, he will let out a little cry.  And, yes, it's at least a two person job to clip his nails.

Whenever I tell RT that "someone" needs a mani/pedi, we get the feeling that Pippen can understand what we are saying and will disappear for the entire weekend.

By Sunday night, I realized that "someone's" nails had not been clipped.  I corralled Pippen in the family room and RT, quietly, got the clippers.  Apparently, it wasn't quiet enough.  "Someone" heard the cabinet or the grabbing of the clippers and bolted for the basement.  We tried luring him into the family room with homemade french fries, but, he was on to us and our little scheme.

Bella came home and we enlisted her help in pinning him down  holding  hugging him.  So, there Bella and I are, hugging and sweet talking Pippen while RT tries to clip his nails.

After a good sweat session  nail clipping attempt, we were able to get 1 1/2 paws clipped.

Unbeknownst to Pippen, the nail clippers have been moved to the family room.  This will hopefully make future attempt a little easier.
